Cottage decorating in style: 5 easy tips

1)      Less Is More:
The cottage decorating style can best be obtained using sober, naturalistic design and light colors. Try to bring together the past and today’s world. The best way to do this is to present  “antique” pieces in a different way  and make them stand out. Always remember: quality is more important than quantity when decorating in the cottage style. This can be quite challenging when dealing with large living spaces: these big areas are demanding imposing and bold pieces of furniture and it is easy to overdo it.

2)      Forget Perfection.
When you go out to hunt for the furniture for your new design, don’t be too demanding : learn to accept that time has taken its toll on the furniture. If you want perfection buy new furniture, but if you go for the cottage style of decorating, know that it is perfectly acceptable if some minor pieces are missing or broken. That is just adding to the character of the furniture.

3)      Colors
Using light colors will transform a room in a clean and beautiful place. By combining these light colors with warm and natural materials you can avoid an overly cold and clinical feeling. You need a cool not cold atmosphere.

4)      Back To Basics
A cottage was originally designed to be a good place to live in. What it looked like was a lot less important than nowadays. The original English cottages were built using the British Arts & Crafts Movement. This building style originated in the first part of the 20th century and tried to make a connection between the interior of the house and the surrounding garden.

5)      Details
It’s the details that will create the feeling of perfection: when choosing decorative objects to complement your interior you need to have an eye for details. As stated in nr 1 above: “ less is more” so don’t go overboard and fill the room. A few well chosen pieces will have a much greater effect.
