How We Show Who We Are With Desks
Working at a place for a long time, people can develop a strong attachment to their desks. A good part of their lives are spent there so it is no wonder that this happens. Many add items to their desk to stake their territory in the work place.
Work life can take up a good one-third of our lifetime. It isn’t any wonder that personal life will spill into work life and the opposite as well. There is a great human need to want to be individualized and stand out from the pack. This is especially so in a terribly drab looking office.
Unfortunately, individualism sometimes will be taken too far. Some people can have a tendency to over do it with decorations. This is why many offices have had to implement rules that limit the amount of personalization. This is to prevent the very unprofessional look of too much clutter.
With these limitations in place, it makes someone really have to think about the objects that they feel identifies who they are as a person. Instead of twenty different action figures, maybe select one that really shows who you are. Some people have a hard time selecting one vacation photo out of the twenty that they have displayed. The one way around that is to use a digital picture frame.
These electronic frames allow a worker to show as many pictures and different aspects of their life as they want. Even a home video can be displayed on some of these frames. Of course, this can also be taken too far. Some issues that come up with these are offensive material. With so many different sensibilities in an office environment it is possible to offend some. Be very careful of the pictures that will be displayed on a loop because you could end up being asked to remove the frame.
This has become quite a distraction for some people and company policies are being modified to exclude this type of electronic as an option. It is based on the same principal of stopping casual Friday’s because someone goes too far. The guy that wears flip-flops and beach attire is usually the one that gets that privilege taken away for the entire office.
Some other people have the right idea by using objects that have sentimental value to them. These objects can be anything from a pocket comb to a pressed flower. These items are wonderful conversation starters that lead to a wonderful story about who you are.
Being forced to think about a few items that identify you as an individual can be difficult for some. Many have the need to over compensate by cluttering up their desks with too much memorabilia. They can really tone down the clutter and keep people laughing at the work place for three hundred sixty-five days out of the year.
