These days everybody is concerned about the security of their homes and justly so! According to official American government statistics, the quantity of house burglaries has risen by nearly ten percent in the last five years to about fourteen million per year.

That is a great deal of homes. I was burgled ten years ago and I have studied and done my best to never be one of those statistics again. In this article, I will pass on some of my home security tips on how to make your home unappealing to thieves.

The first thing to think about is whether you have anything in your garden, shed or garage that will help a burglar get into your house. Things like ladders, crow-bars, screwdrivers, sledge hammers. If you do, then lock them away. Keep the shed and garage doors locked at all times. If you have a ladder that will not fit in the shed or garage, chain and padlock it to a brick wall, so that nobody can make use of it to get in.

Never believe that your home is less at risk just because you or someone else is inside it. Some thieves are crazy and it is easier to ask someone where the money is than to try to find it yourself. It is easier to demand the keys to the safe than to break the lock. I know. burglars came into my house while I was at work. They saw my safe, but could not get into it, so they came back three nights later when I was at home. It was truly not pleasant.

Do not put a spare front or back door key under the mat, a flower vase or near-by rock. Thieves expect people to do that and it is the first place they look. If you are thinking about leaving a key with a neighbour, pick your neighbour carefully. In fact select the family carefully. Does the family have teenage kids? If so, could their friends find out that that ’spare key’ is to your house? Do you trust all the friends of that neighbour’s kids? Do you even know them?

Beware of strangers. I do not mean be paranoid, but someone asking to make an urgent call because of a ‘breakdown’, could be casing your house or sizing you up. If you want to help, make the call for them or direct them to the nearest public telephone booth or a store.

Keep all your doors and windows locked. If reasonable locked closed, while you are away from the house, but you can get window-stay locks so that you can lock a fanlight window open a few inches too. This is very helpful in the summer or if you have pets. Lock upstairs windows too – your neighbour may have a loose ladder that a thief can use.

Do not display your valuables unnecessarily. Video recorders, DVD players and even the TV can be put in cabinets. Jewellery should be put in a box or a safe. Cash the same. Your house is a home, not a presentation case to would be thieves.

My last home security tip to make your home unappealing to thieves is to stay alert and to warn your neighbours of any slip-ups they are making too. If you can raise the general perception of crime in the people around you, everyone will be a lot more secure.

How To Install Interior Window Shutters With Outside Mounts

We will go with the outside mount here for easier installation, this will take less time and gives you more flexibility with regards to how you hang the shutters. With outside mounts you can hang shutters vertically or horizontally.

The first thing that you will do is mount your hanging strips along each side of the frame of the window. Now you will take the shutter panels and hinge them together with face mount hinges that are supplied by the company that made the shutters. Make sure you have a spacer between each of the shutter panels so that you will be able to close the shutters easily.

Now you will take the hinges and connect them to the shutters, make sure to follow the shutters manufacturers instructions on how to place the hinges on the shutters. You will now want to make sure to mark holes on the hanging strips so that you will know where to connect the hinges at. Once you have done that, you can go ahead and drill holes for the screws for the hinges.

The final installation step is to actually attach the shutters to the hanging strips.

Final note: If you decide to buy unfinished shutters, it is advisable that you paint or stain them before you install them. And if you have louvered shutters it will be a lot less time consuming and easier to use spray paint for these types of shutters.

What You Can Do To Repair Your Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds can do a lot for a room. They are often used with sliding windows and doors. They add a fresh and modernized appearance as well as keep out the dazzling sun that may heat the room. The window blinds are often made up of three main parts.

The header is part that is installed horizontally from the top frame of the window.

First you have to find out which area of the blinds are broken. In case of plastic window blinds, the point of conjunction between the slats and the clip is often broken. And of course, there are cases in which the clip is broken.

Slats made of fabric have the tendency to break where they are appended to the clip. In some situations, the small part that is made of plastic or wood at the bottom of the vane can fall out.

Sometimes, the problem lies in the header itself. If the head tail is damaged, the slat will no longer function properly. After you have figured out what the problem is, you can begin fixing it.

If the slats are broken, you will need to do a replacement. You can do this very quickly and easily. You only have to get a replacement slat and install back to clip. This can be done without tools. But if the clip is a bit loose, you may need to use a screwdriver to apply pressure to the clip. When using a screwdriver, remember to be gentle because the clip is often made of delicate plastic.

If you are using a fabric vane, there may be torn portions after long time use. In this case, a needle and thread is enough to fix it. If the part near the conjunction between the vane and the clip is torn, the vane will drop. To amend this, you can use a small portion near the rear of the slat and glue it onto the torn part.

Replacing the clips is also very simple. For most cases, you have to change the entire clip; however if only a portion of it is damaged, then you just have to replace that part. For the first step, you need to remove the old clip. This can be done very quickly. Now you just have to insert a new clip and ensure that when the slat is attached, it is all facing the same direction as the other slats.

If you happen to have the damaged header, the situation will become a tough one. First, you need to check the warranty card to see if your vertical blinds are still under warranty. If they are, you have to call the customer service center and tell them about your problem. The only part that you can fix by yourself is the chain. When the chain of the window blinds is damaged, you can replace it with a new one. But if other parts such as the veins or the holder are damaged, chances are you will have to call a professional to see to the problem.

What Mistakes To Avoid With Slate Tile Flooring

If you are expecting very large quantities of slate tile flooring, keep in mind Murphy’s Law! Anything can happen (including chipped tiles), so it will be highly probably that not all of them will arrive intact.

This is true, and it is not to be a big shock to you. When dealing with mass amounts of slate, damages can occur when handling them (or shipping them).

So, how would you take on this sticky situation? You would already have extra tiles, that’s how! By ordering extra tiles with your existing first order, you will easily grab an extra tile from the extra box should you find a broken one on delivery.

Watch and you will see–once your boxes of tiles show up, open every one of them up. When you find chipped and cracked pieces, set them aside in an empty box for easy returning.

When doing a dry run of installing the slate tiles, and/or when doing the actual installation, you should never forget to check for loose debris and dirt on the surface areas.

If there are any loose materials lingering around, it will not make for a smooth installation into the floor substrate. The tiles will have a high chance of being quite not level with each other.

When you are ready to place the floor tiles down, be sure to check if the surface area is wet or not. If the floor is wet, don’t install a thing! Even though your research has told you that slate tiles are robust, it is still good common sense to have when taking chances with trapped moisture. You just don’t know what to expect with moisture and mother nature.

Also, once you have all of the slate tile flooring down, you may move on to the waxing procedures. This is a very crucial step, actually, for it is a waiting process. You can not proceed to the next step of applying sealer until all of the wax has finished curing.

The wait is well worth it, though. I know I’m not speaking for myself when I say that footprint marks left in the wax are not so nice to look at permanently in slate tiles. I made the mistake myself, and I’ve never been able to get rid of the marks.

As the next chapter in the “waiting for tiles” saga, you will have to wait for the grouting, too. The average wait time: 24 hours. This way, all of the mortar can settle nicely and dry up well before you grout.
